Founded in 1922 as the Pittsburgh Waist Overall & Mercantile Company by Jacob Scott, this dry goods emporium originally catered to the work wear needs of local steel workers and coal miners. It was in 1924 that Jacob relocated his store to its current location, which at that time was in the heart of Pittsburgh’s industrial steel district — the Southside. Jacob’s motto — “Never sacrifice quality for price.”
Jacob’s son Randall took over the family business in the late 1950’s. Randall’s gift of vision and awareness was the catalyst that took Pittsburgh Waist Overall & Mercantile Company from a local work wear store to one of the nation’s leading retailers of women’s and men’s blue jeans. Witnessing the youth revolution of the 1960’s Randall realized that the wares he specialized in had adopted a cultural significance beyond its basic function. So, in 1966, Randall formally changed the name of the business to Pittsburgh Jeans Company.
